Colossians Bible Study – Colossians 3:1-17 Bible Study

Colossians 3:1-17 calls every Christian to live a holy life for God. We are to separate ourselves from the practices of the world unto God. The first commandment, love God with all your heart, soul and mind, tells us to walk in complete obedience to God’s commandments. To love God is to do God’s commandments and his will. Some Christians are still struggling in their sins because they did not make any effort to get rid of them. You are to make the decision to get rid of your bad habits on the day you believe in Jesus Christ. Salvation is by grace. However, if you do not have a transformed life, it also means that you did not truly believe in Jesus. Disciples who truly believe in Jesus will be willing to make sacrifices to follow him. Jesus Christ said anyone who does not deny himself and carry his cross daily is not worthy to be his disciples. To deny yourself is to not gratify the desires of your flesh when temptation occurs. We are often tempted to sin because our flesh tells us to do so. For example, people who have weakness in alcoholism will be tempted to drink when they enter into a bar. The will of the Spirit is always opposite against the desire of your flesh. To abide by the Spirit, you must have self control and choose not to satisfy your flesh but obey God. Some may feel that it is difficult to walk in obedience because they lack self control. You can pray to God and ask him to give you strength to overcome your sin. God will help you if you are sincere to change your old lifestyle. Holiness is required in order to have an intimate fellowship with God. Only those who live a holy lie will have intimate fellowship with God. A good prayer life is a sign of a good Christian who have intimate fellowship with God. If you live in sin, there will be an open doorway for the devil to accuse you so that your prayer cannot reach God. If you want your prayer to be heard, you must live a holy life by walking in obedience in God’s commandments. God is serious for his children to live a holy life. If you continue to live in sin, God may send his servant to give you counsel. He may also use different circumstances to prompt you to take action and get rid of your sinful lifestyle. If you don’t take heed, God may discipline you by putting you in a difficult situation so that you will turn back to him. Holiness is necessary in order to have an effective ministry before God.  Only a person who lives a holy life can be used by God for his ministry.
